How To Choose Hair Product

Everyone’s hair is different and that means you’re going to have to figure out what is the best product to use for your particular hair and hair style. Let’s learn some of the different types of products and what they are best for.

Going from least flexible to most flexible ->

Gel is used to hold a specific hairstyle in place all day. It’s basically glue for your hair. Once it dries, it’s not going to change from that position. Just be careful after it’s dry, because it can flake off if you mess with it. No body wants what looks like dandruff falling on their shoulders. I would only go with a gel if you’re going for an extreme hairstyle that you can’t hold in place with anything else.

Wax and Clay:

Wax is great because it holds hair in place like gel but is pliable. You can tweak it throughout the day to keep it in line without needing more product. Want to change-up your hairstyle after work? Done. It’s really versatile because you can use it for a messy “just got out of bed” look or a polished hairstyle where everything is in its place. The downside to was is it can clump if you have curly hair. And it’s not going to wash out as easily as a cream (which could be a good thing if it’s raining…)

Clay is just a stronger form of wax. It’s a bit stickier so it holds stronger.

Pomade is a creamier version of wax. It holds shape to your hair, but it’s natural looking because it’s not greasy. This is what you’re going to want to use if you have curly hair. Since it has that slightly creamy texture, it won’t clump in those curls.

Cream can add a little control to your hair without making it look like you put product in it. It tames flyaways without making your hair greasy or stiff but isn’t going to hold your hair perfectly in place.

Tip: With any product, put in in the palm of your hand and rub them together before working it into your hair

Whatever you’re hairstyle is, there’s something out there for you. Hopefully knowing what each of these are and what they’re useful for will help you decide which product to try. Also do some searching to see what others with your same hair style use!

“It used to be just gel and mousse, but now the hair-product aisle is packed with pomades, waxes, powders, and something called sodium spray.” – GQ

  1. Hi Zack- great insight. I have always found that wax and clay work well as i dont have to worry about my hair getting out of control. The last thing a man wants is to be constantly checking himself in the mirror so the more control provided, the better- Richard
